Farm Entrepreneurship in a Rural Malaysian Setting – a Hands-on Experiential Learning

SCI Malaysia collaborated with HANDS to organize an interesting and educational Workcamp at a Farm – entitled ;Farm Entrepreneurship in a Rural Malaysian Setting – a Hands-on Experiential Leaning

The Workcamp was set up at a 5 year old farm (still new and young), but the enterprising Farm Owner had turned a barren 2 acres of sloping terrain into a very well organized, structured, facilated productive Farm with 100 Durian Trees, plus papaya, banana, passion fruits, tapioca, pineapple, lots of vegetables, plus poultry. He also has 21 watch-dogs to look after the farm from monkeys and intruders.

The farm house has simple modern amenities, hot showers, air cond rooms, well plus rain-harvested water, spacious open-kitchen, plenty space for dining and discussion. Meals were all prepared by our volunteers – they were incredible and included fresh vegetables from the farm, and we had home made fried rice, 10 ingredients soup, tosai, pizza, bar-b-q chicken, 3 combs of Banana..etc etc

We did lots of farm work… transplanting, trimming, weeding, pest control, nursery construction.

We had amazing hands-on lectures and sharing sessions with the Farm owner, an arborist, an experience planter on farming

Typical of SCI Workcamp we had discussion on Peace Related Issues and Awareness – including – The Impact and Horror of the 2 Atomic Bombing 80 yrs ago, The Golden Rules, Volunteering and Service, approach to Counselling… history and core values of SCI.

We also had discussion on Art of Photo-taking, Value of Honesty.

Volunteers also enjoyed a walk up a river and swim for some, rubbish collecting as well – small community service. In the evening members played card games, karaoke, sat by the campfire, chat and laughed into the night.

Members had a choice to sleep in the tent, air-cond and non aircond room.

Every night – we had Reflection – reviewed the Days Activities and their Expectations, Concern, Issues… all went well.

All participants gave a Thumb uo for the Camp. We thank the Volunteers for flying all the way here, and the Local for traveling all the way to Pantai, Nick’s Dusun. We had 9 who logged in at the camp throughout, and another15 who joined part-time.
