Semoya Eco-Farming Camp

Background: Semoya is a Javanese traditional village located in Brebah District, Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta Special Region. The society here still maintains its agricultural tradition. Their main commodity is rice which is being planted surrounding the area. As a tourist village destination, the Semoya community continues to preserve Javanese culture as one of their daily activities. There are many activities ranging from dance and performing arts such as ‘ketoprak’ and ‘wayang’ which are often held for local communities and tourists. The local community started to become an eco-friendly village. They start to reduce their dependence on manufactured chemical fertilizers for their agricultural land which can potentially damage the environment.
Project: The community cooperates with the Bhumi Horta Foundation this year to provide long-term assistance to support the transformation, from conventional agriculture to environmentally friendly agriculture. This mentoring program includes several activities, such as assisting with the production of organic agricultural production facilities, sustainable agricultural cultivation techniques, and permaculture principles and implementation practices.
Aims:
- Create an organic fertilizer center for fostering plant growth
- Creating a sustainable organic farming education center for the community
- Increasing the participation of the younger generation in their farm
- Creating a cultural dialogue between the local community and international volunteers
Work:
- Producing Organic Fertilizer in Livestock Areas
- Creating a Permaculture Garden in Semoya Village
- Participate in local community activities
- Organizing a farming workshop about permaculture principles implementation
- Supporting community and cultural arts activities
Accommodation: Volunteer House. Sleeping Bag Needed. Volunteers need to cook their food by themselves.
Special remarks: The majority who live in this village are Muslims. Feel free to bring equipment or educational materials to have fun with local children at your campsite.

Background: The organic garden initiated by Mas Rengga and his father Sukirstioyono in 2013, ‘Konco Tani’ Garden, focuses on developing organic farming production facilities by using the natural resources available around the small garden which they manage independently. They carry the mission of liberating farmers from the influence of middlemen who cause many losses to farmers. Until, in early 2018, they met an Agro sociopreneur called Teman Berkebun/Bhumi Horta and decided to develop a permaculture garden in their area along with agricultural volunteers in Semarang City and surrounding. In early 2023, they were given responsibility to manage a waqf land from an Islamic educational institution and changed the name of their garden to “Konco Tani Nurul Haq” Garden.
Project: By collaborating with Teman Berkebun/Bhumi Horta, “Konco Tani” intends to create a garden that applies the principles of permaculture in a sustainable manner. To make this happen, farmers and volunteers are starting a goat farm and an organic fertilizer production center for the organic farming community in Semarang city. Gradually, the Konco Tani garden will become a sustainable and educational agricultural system.

Vern Cork Library Project

Background: Balinese people are already familiar with foreign tourists who visit the island every year, contributing to the region’s income. However, there are not many adequate facilities to improve literacy skills in this location. The low reading interest of local residents, The project was initiated by Vern Cork, an Australian writer with a long association with the local Balinese Community. The current books to be collated are a collection of three generations of the family of Ibu Dayu’. This library will be used by local residents to hold educational sessions to stimulate creativity and increase reading interest in the younger generation.
Project: Organizing a small community library. To increase reading interest among residents, we collaborate with local communities and volunteers to create a simple library that can be accessed by local residents.
Aims:
- Ensure bookshelves and books are in a sound state for long-term public access Excite local children to the prospect of book learning
- Arrange a small library for the local community and provide it with a digital catalog
- Conduct intercultural learning with the local community
Work:
- Book Cleaning
- Arranging books on the bookshelves based on subject categories such as History, Culture, society, Law, politics
- Running a non-formal education session with local youth and children
- Creating a digital record of the books
- Volunteers will write their own story during the project, to leave as a record
Accommodation: Sua Bali Resort, Males & Females will be in separate rooms and will stay in the neighborhood of the host family with the use of a shared toilet and kitchen.
Special remarks: Feel free to bring equipment or educational materials to have fun with local children at your campsite. Sua Bali is a simple resort in the old Balinese style and away from the tourist areas. Volunteers must be prepared for a very simple lifestyle.

Bhumi Horta Youth Learning Center

Background: The Bhumi Horta Foundation was founded on April 22, 2017, on the same day as Earth Day. The organization promotes sustainable agriculture that applies permaculture principles in home-based farm scale to industrial scale farms in urban areas, or in buffer areas. To achieve this target, the Bhumi Horta Youth Learning Center was created in order to achieve this goal by organizing small classes and workshops for the younger generation. Youth and children will take part in learning activities using non-formal methods. Gardening activities are one of the activities that must be followed because through gardening activities the young generation can learn many things from various different scientific subjects.
Work: Volunteers will support activities at the Bhumi Horta Learning Center. This location is also known as our base camp. The three activity centers are Bhumi Horta Base Camp in Pedurungan sub-district, Konco Tani Garden in Sendangguwo village, Temblang sub-district, and Kebun Qita in South Semarang District. At the Bhumi Horta Learning Center, volunteers will help the children’s learning process, especially in English class, and carry out urban farming activities with neighbours and local youth. Volunteers will run a community farming program to support local residents in providing their own food. Volunteers will work along with local youth to do some activities such as seeding, plant maintenance, making farming installations, making organic fertilizer, planting to harvesting. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to train children and youth in English language and cultural exchange activities.
Requirements: Volunteers will live with the host family who are the founder couple of the Bhumi Horta Foundation (Sany & Ifa). The house has facilities such as a shared kitchen, and a bathroom with Indonesian Basic Standard (Toilet, Wet Toilet, No shower or bath provided, and simple kitchen). Local food is prepared from food grown in the garden or is available at traditional markets located not far from where the volunteers live.
Volunteers will hear the azdan (Praying Call) five times a day for Muslim residents. Azhan’s voice will be heard quite loudly at the volunteer’s house because there are several mosques at that location. The adhan times are as follows: Early morning (4:30 am), Middle of the day (11:30 am), Afternoon (15:00), Dawn time (18:00), And Evening (19:00).
Volunteers should be ready to adapt to the Indonesian, local way of life, and willing to create relationships with volunteer friends, hosts, and local people.
Accommodation: There’s a private room available that can accommodate up to 2 people. The host provides simple bedding.
Food: We will cook and live together.
Pocket money: None
Insurance: Volunteers are responsible for their own insurance.
Fees: 220 EUR per month. It will cover living expenses (gas, water, electricity, food) and project materials. It shall cover the project sustainability program with the Bhumi Horta Foundation.

Background: Olas Asih School is a private school located in Kemenuh, Gianyar Bali. This school uniquely combines formal and non-formal education. At the school, students are invited to do some habits every morning such as meditation, yoga, and prayer, in between activities, students and teachers are involved in gardening activities in the garden around the school.
Work: Volunteers will be assigned to assist teachers in class in providing learning, especially in foreign languages. Volunteers are also given the freedom to conduct sessions according to their background or profession to enrich the students’ experience. Volunteers will also create activities outside the classroom such as in the educational garden.
Requirements: Volunteers will live with a host family near the school and. The house has facilities such as a shared kitchen, and a bathroom with Indonesian Basic Standard (Toilet, Wet Toilet, No shower or bath provided, and simple kitchen). Local food is prepared from food grown in the garden or is available at traditional markets located not far from where the volunteers live.
