Fikri and his team successfully executed a Local Action project in Pekalongan, Central Java. This project served as the final assignment for the Camp Leader Training: Peace Across The Sea, a collaborative initiative between IVP Australia and Bhumi Horta Foundation under the auspices of Service Civil International (SCI). Each participant received a micro-grant to fund projects in their respective regions, which included the team’s project, “Eco-Maggot Mandiri: Organic Waste Management Based on Maggot Bioconversion.”
The team’s project focused on developing local solutions for organic waste management, motivated by the pressing waste crisis in the region. For over six months, the Pekalongan Final Disposal Site (TPA) had been sealed by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry due to severe overload. This resulted in significant waste accumulation along the city’s main roads. Addressing this urgent situation, the team’s strategy was guided by data: the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reports that organic waste dominates Indonesia’s composition at 57%, followed by plastic at 16%. The Mayor of Pekalongan further highlighted that city markets specifically produce an excessive volume of vegetable and food waste, requiring specialized handling, as quoted by detik.com. Therefore, implementing effective solutions, such as utilizing waste-eating organisms like maggot, was deemed necessary to process and reduce the discarded organic volume.
The Local Action, “Eco-Maggot Mandiri: Organic Waste Management Based on Maggot Bioconversion,” was conducted on Sunday, November 2, 2025, involving residents of Gang Masgrito, Api-Api Village. During the program, participants received comprehensive training on maggot cultivation, learning the life cycle and dual benefits of the Black Soldier Fly (BSF). Iqtada Binnabi, the program’s speaker, emphasized the technical procedure: after the eggs hatch, the larvae are placed in a media of bran mixed with adequate water to ensure optimal growth.
The program received strong support from the community. Mr. Mahson, the Head of the Neighbourhood Unit (Ketua RT), stated that this project was novel to Api-Api Village and required continuous assistance to effectively reduce the volume of organic waste. The discussion session was highly constructive, with residents showing great enthusiasm. Specifically, Mr. Aminun inquired about product marketing strategies, while other residents posed detailed questions regarding maggot cultivation techniques, all of which were expertly addressed by the presenter. Mr. Sany, the founder of Bhumi Horta Foundation, directly take a look at the project and expressed his strong hope that this initiative would not be a one-day event, but would run sustainably and serve as a foundation for future community projects.

Eco-Maggot Mandiri: Pengelolaan Sampah Organik Berbasis Maggot

Selama program, warga belajar dari A hingga Z bagaimana cara membudidayakan maggot.
